MEET OUR THERAPISTS

head-shot

SARA R. CHURCH, MS, LMHC – PRACTICE OWNER

My name is Sara Church, and I am a licensed clinical mental health counselor. I have 12 years of experience in behavioral health with individuals, couples, and families needing support through complex life problems. I recognize how difficulties in emotional health can impact all life areas, and limit one’s ability to grow into the person they’re meant to be. I am experienced in treating a variety of issues in children, teens, and adults. My therapeutic approach centers around the identified needs of the person in treatment, as well as the strengths they possess. Ultimately, therapy is meant for developing a deeper understanding of ourselves and our environment. In doing so, we are able to access love, happiness, peace, balance, and/or purpose where it has been difficult to find without guidance. It is my responsibility to support and empower my clients while holding them accountable to the goals they have set for themselves.

My theoretical platform draws from humanist, attachment, and feminist theories. I also find behavioral and cognitive behavioral strategies to be effective. In regards to trauma resolution, I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Narrative Exposure Therapy. I am practiced at treating the needs within LGBTQIA+ family, including required letters for gender affirmation.

DAVID M. JAMES, MSW, LCSW, LCAC

My name is David James.  I am licensed as both a Clinical Social Worker and a Clinical Addiction Counselor.  I have worked in mental health and substance abuse counseling for 23 years, in community mental health, child welfare, addiction treatment, and managed care.  My goal is to provide a safe, welcoming place to heal your hurts and become the happy, whole person you were meant to be despite what has happened to get in your way.  I primarily use cognitive behavioral therapy, although I am trained in, and regularly draw upon skills from, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Schema-Focused Therapy, and several other treatment approaches.  I am experienced in the treatment of mood disorders, anxiety disorders, serious mental illness, and addiction, as well as the specific needs of the LGBTQIA+ communities.

My personal areas of interest are addressing the long-term effects of trauma on health and mental health, and assisting transgender individuals in the process of becoming their authentic selves.  A transman myself, I can help navigate the gender self-exploration and transition processes, as well as provide an understanding ear and a helping hand for all the other issues LGBTQIA+ individuals, couples and families face.
